Conclusion

My findings are only a small part of this issue, but I believe they effectively illustrate a need on this campus and suggest a solution to start handling the problem. It’s clear to many faculty and students on this campus that we aren’t talking about this issue. As I showed, other institutions (families, schools, churches) have had success with teaching, giving guidelines, and living an example of modesty.

Modesty may not be the easiest or most popular subject to address, but it is extremely important to helping maintain a healthy atmosphere, both socially, academically, and spiritually on our campus. It is my hope that Walla Walla College can recognize these possibilities and move forward with providing for our students in this manner.

I do agree with you to some extent (there are socially and professionally times where modest dress is essential), and I found it interesting reading the extensive research you have compiled...BUT (playing devil's advocate) if other cultures have proven anything is that equality and being valued as a free-thinking, intelligent women has little to do with dress. In Iran, women are to wear chadors, black cloth that wraps around their head and hides their forms. Are they then free of sexual harassment, are they taken more seriously socially or in the workplace, are they free from of being raped? Not necessarily.
I spent years hiding behind big baggy sweatshirts because I was large “chested” at a young age...but I tell you what, I STILL had boys and men speak to me with their tracker-beams 12 inches south of my face. I could be wearing a turtleneck and still show cleavage...So, does that mean I must swelter under a sweatshirt during the summer in order to be taken seriously on campus (I am sure I will attractive more negative attention that way as the idiot who is passed out from wearing a parka in 90 degree weather)...sorry, not going to happen. Regardless of what I am wearing, I deserve to be treated with respect and the words coming out of my mouth should be the reason why I am taken seriously or not...and frankly I believe that has little to do with what I am wearing and more to do with the type of person who is hearing my words.

some of us might not know what is appropriate for certain settings so it could be that we could have more discussions about the issue and foster proper education
